When I started working at Cotton Babies, I knew absolutely nothing about cloth diapers, babywearing… really, anything about babies. But it sure didn’t take me long to learn! In no time, I memorized the names and colors of every cloth diaper we sold and became increasingly excited to one day cloth diaper my own baby. The interest in babywearing followed soon after. I’d watch and chat with ladies around the office wearing their babies (yes, we bring our babies to work), I’d research the carriers we sold, I’d scroll through the Flash Mob and see photos of all the different carriers the mamas loved, and before I knew it, I was hooked. Before I even had the thought of having a baby, I was excited about babywearing.
A few years later, I was pregnant and three of the many things I was excited to experience with my baby: cloth diapers, breastfeedingand babywearing. Knowing that I was going to be bringing my baby to work with me, I knew babywearing would become a big part of our journey; therefore, it was important for me to find the right carrier for us. After much research and MANY visits to my friends in customer service, I finally decided to start out with two carriers: a Sakura Bloom and a Solly Baby Wrap.
Just like the ladies at work, I imagined those blissful moments of bonding with my baby while running errands, at work, around the house… everywhere! I couldn’t wait to begin our babywearing journey. Unfortunately, it didn’t start off as blissful as I imagined. As I’m sure many first-time mamas can relate, I was a nervous wreck. Every time I attempted to put her in the carrier, she would cry, causing me to imagine every possible thing that could go wrong. With the stress of it all, I gave up way sooner than I should have.
It wasn’t until she was a few months older that I decided to try a soft structured carrier, the ERGObaby 360. By this age, she absolutely loved facing out; She wanted to see the world! From the very first moment I slid her into this versatile carrier, she loved it. She would coo, smile and stay content for hours! I’d bounce on an exercise ball while working at my desk and within minutes, she was asleep. I was ecstatic! We had finally found our carrier, and my babywearing dreams had come true.
Even my husband fell in love with the Ergo 360. The first night I brought it home, he strapped Harper in and wore her around the house for the whole evening. He now wears her everywhere he can… While we’re out running errands, at church, even around the house. I’m happy to report we are now a babywearing family.
I’ve definitely built up my confidence with babywearing as Harper has gotten older. As she grows and becomes stronger, I’m not as nervous when putting her in the carrier. I recently tried my first two carriers again and found that she is now happy and content in those as well. Just like the Ergo, within minutes of snuggle time, she falls asleep.
Having the opportunity to have Harper with me at work is an incredible blessing, but it can also be a challenge. There are days she wants more attention than I can give her while working. That’s where babywearing comes in. When I wear Harper, I’m not only able to get work done, but I’m also fulfilling that motherly desire to bond with my baby. We snuggle, she coos and eventually falls asleep. I don’t have to worry about where she’s at, go back and forth checking on her while she’s sleeping or stop what I’m doing to entertain her. She’s right there with me and I love it.
Babywearing has been a big part of my journey as a working mama. I’m so grateful for all the benefits it provides for me and my baby girl.
